President Cyril Ramaphosa has officially announced that South Africa’s local government elections will be held on Wednesday, November 4, 2026. The announcement was made during his closing address at the Extended Presidential Coordinating Council meeting held in Birchwood, Ekurhuleni, attended by leaders from all three spheres of government.
Speaking with authority, Ramaphosa declared, “I therefore determine that the next local government elections should be held on a Wednesday, which is in the middle of the week, on a date which I now determine as November 4.”
The date falls on a midweek workday, meaning South Africans will need to plan accordingly when heading to the polls. Home Affairs Minister Velenkosini Hlabisa will officially gazette the proclaimed date, making it legally binding across the country.
Political parties have already been mobilising for months. The MK Party has activated its election task team structures, the ANC is finalising its mayoral candidate selection process, and opposition parties are equally gearing up for what promises to be a highly contested election across all nine provinces.
This election will determine who governs your municipality, who addresses service delivery, and who is accountable to communities on the ground. Local government elections remain the closest form of democracy to the everyday lives of South Africans, and every registered voter carries the power to shape the outcome.
Voters are encouraged to verify their registration status at their nearest IEC office or by visiting www.elections.org.za well ahead of the November deadline.
