BUSTED: 5-Man Cross-Border Car Theft Syndicate Smashed in Limpopo
Police have dealt a major blow to a sophisticated cross-border vehicle theft syndicate — arresting five Mozambican nationals believed to have been behind a string of car thefts across Limpopo and Gauteng, with stolen vehicles smuggled out of South Africa through both Mozambique and Zimbabwe.
The arrests followed a high-level intelligence-driven operation involving multiple law enforcement units, including the Provincial Tracking Team, Polokwane Vehicle Crime Investigation Unit, Limpopo Highway Patrol, Tracker Connect and Tshimollo Security. Police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba confirmed the operation was months in the making.
The group is accused of targeting Isuzu bakkies and high-end 4×4 Toyota vehicles in Seshego, Mankweng, Lebowakgomo, Polokwane and Westenburg. Investigators say the suspects used specialised devices to disable vehicle tracking systems before transporting stolen vehicles to Gauteng, where fraudulent registration papers were created. The vehicles were then smuggled across the border — through Lebombo into Mozambique and through Beitbridge into Zimbabwe.
Police raided properties in Ladanna and Greenside Extensions 71 and 78 on 28 and 29 April, recovering two vehicles stolen in Seshego earlier this year, a generator allegedly taken during one of the incidents, and various housebreaking tools. The five suspects — aged between 26 and 42 — were found to be in the country illegally.
Investigators have connected the syndicate to 22 vehicle theft cases reported between December 2024 and April 2026.
