The Burger Street municipal swimming pool in Polokwane has officially reopened to the public – months after it was shut down following a drowning incident on 7 January this year.

The closure prompted the Polokwane City municipality to conduct a full assessment of the facility, carrying out maintenance work and safety upgrades before allowing residents back in.
Municipal spokesperson Thipa Selala confirmed the reopening, stating that the City remains committed to providing safe and affordable recreational spaces for the community.
Selala reminded pool-goers that lifeguard instructions are mandatory, running within the pool area is prohibited, and children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult at all times. Alcohol and glass containers are strictly forbidden across all municipal swimming facilities.

Residents who are not confident swimmers are urged to stay within the shallow areas and to avoid swimming alone.
The pool water is heated to around 24°C during the winter months.

Management may temporarily close the facility during adverse weather conditions such as lightning or heavy rainfall, with no refunds issued in such cases.
