JUSTICE SERVED | LEPHALALE FATHER GETS 20 YEARS FOR KILLING HIS OWN TODDLER

LEPHALALE, LIMPOPO.  A young father has been handed a lengthy prison sentence after he was found guilty of one of the most disturbing crimes to shake the Lephalale community in recent memory.

Thabang Hendrick Letsebe, 24, was sentenced to 20 years behind bars by the Polokwane Division of the High Court on Tuesday, 05 May 2026, after being convicted of murdering his own 2-year-old son.

 

On the morning of Sunday, 06 October 2024, residents of Shongoane village, outside Lephalale, alerted police after a disturbing discovery was made in the area.

 

When officers arrived at the scene, they found the mutilated body of a toddler lying on a bed inside a home. What made the situation even more harrowing was that the child’s own father was present at the scene and was found in possession of some of the boy’s body parts.

Letsebe was arrested immediately and charged with murder on the spot.

 

After the matter was brought before the High Court, justice was finally delivered nearly two years later. The court handed down a 20-year direct imprisonment sentence, a ruling that brought some measure of closure to a community that had been deeply traumatised by the incident.

Authorities praised the work of investigators, with special recognition going to Warrant Officer Tebele Mafokoane, whose dedication and thorough handling of the case was credited as instrumental in securing the conviction.

“This senseless and horrific killing left the community in shock,” an official remarked, adding that all those involved in bringing the matter to justice deserved commendation.

The case sent shockwaves through Shongoane village and the broader Lephalale area, with many residents expressing both relief at the sentence and grief over the loss of such a young and innocent life.

 

A child who had barely begun to experience the world was failed by the one person who was supposed to protect him the most.
